DESCRIPTION: APW - South Bend, believed to be the personal watch of South Bend Watch Co's treasurer, Grade 293, 19J, 16S, gold-filled OF original display case with matching stamped serial numbers to its components (though band marking is unusually arranged with its digits from down to up), white enamel DS dial Runic style dial with "Chas. T Lindsey" in place of hour numerals, SW-LS, lever escapement with capped escape wheel, sunburst pattern nickel damascene, s#439308. A fascinating piece, this watch and the following lot feature dials custom marked for one of a pair of brothers that were prominent South Bend, Indiana residents and each watch also features an unusual gold-filled display case. The dial of this example is marked for Charles T. Lindsey, who is an especially notable figure in South Bend Watch Co. history as he was the original Treasurer of the watch company, and we believe this to have been his personal watch. Please see our photos for an excerpt from an article titled "Watchmaking in America" which is found in the April, 1947 edition of "The H.I.A. Journal" (Horological Institute of America) which mentions Charles T. Lindsey's involvement with the formation of the South Bend Watch Co. and also lists his position as its original Treasurer.
